I had such high hopes for this book: it was written by a Christian author, it only received 4 & 5 star reviews here on Amazon with many people calling it a childhood favorite and it was recommended in the book "Honey for a Teen's Heart". So I ordered it and immediately started reading it as a family read-aloud with my kids, ages 16 and 11, without previewing it. My bad. The writing style was engaging, with the story told from the point of view of a precocious 10 or 11 year old boy, much like the style of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever", which is one of our family's favorite books. However, as I continued to read, I was very disturbed to find several sections of the book talking about sex, not in graphic, descriptive manner, but in a creepy Judy Blume sort of way. Examples: 1) The 2 main characters discuss hearing their parents having sex, the noises they make, etc. 2) There's an entire chapter about a pedophile youth minister and 3) The main character discusses having sexual feelings toward his older sister. There may be more examples, but after the 3rd incident, we quit the book. I was tired of having to edit as I was reading out loud & I was creeped out because I was worried about what might come up next!

Heart rendering and so realistic. I have grandsons this age and the author has captured their true spirit. Loved it
I have read this book at least a dozen times. Each time I get even more from it. I am now reading it to my children. While they enjoy the "funny parts", I continue to learn to question my faith to make it stronger. This is a must read for everyone!!
This is a great book. Love the story line and like that both books are in one.
It was an excellent book right from the start.
These two books are great humor especially for the Boomer generation that hail from Southern CA. The lightheartedness of --two pre-adolescent mischievous--boys portrayed in a setting of the early 1960's wholesomeness. Both stories are a breath of fresh air.
A happy trip down memory lane for anyone born in the 50's, especially those familiar with Southern California landmarks and events. The pranks of the two young boys, although a little far-fetched at times, are both hilarious and convicting. The ending is sad, but redemptive and healing. A though provoking read for all "Standard Christians"!
Touching. Character driven without tricks or plot twists; chardacters drawn so the reader can identify with them and not doubt the events. A real joy depicting a decade simpler than the electronic age. Makes one wistful for our past culture, even with the shortcomings so common even then. A book for all ages with loyalty, friendship, coming of age, and first love vey prominent. It is my wife's favorite fiction book ever, and on my top 10. Glad I found it again as we'd misplaced our original copy. A worthy read.
