Don't Need No Water - edition by Evans Light. Mystery, Thriller & Suspense eBooks @ . Reviews
I really enjoyed this short story by Evans Light, who also wrote the wonderful horror collection 'Screamscapes'. This dark little ditty is set in a dismal town called Barkersville, and opens with a group of friends committing horrendous acts of vandalism, to ensure the town fathers, if not the very town itself, pays for the violation of the lead character's girlfriend. Since this is a short story, that's told from the main character's point of view, I don't want to say more, for fear of giving away some great twists in the narrative. Suffice it to say, that a story from Evans Light, will rarely take you down a path you planned on, or are comfortable with. This is an intense tale of love and revenge, that in the end, will hit you like a ton of bricks, and wondering why you haven't heard more about this fantastic author.
I wouldn't recommend this for children, or for those uncomfortable with violence. But if you're a fan of the horror genre, or just enjoy a well written and thought out story, this is for you. Bone Appetit!!
Too many great lines in this short book like "We marched forward into the night...with a fistful of vengeance and a truckload of hellfire" and "There was no death of which he was worthy" and not least this one "I made sure to leave his hands attached when we were done talking. Couldn't make the same promise to him about those eyeballs though, not after what they had seen." My tolerance level for gruesome and language isn't what it was, but this one was wavering right around the upper limit which left me eminently satisfied. Here's a line that will be sticking with me for a while after "The parched wind blowing through my hair was the last remaining thing about this place that felt good." Nicely done with a great twist at the end!
When Iverson’s girlfriend, Sissy, ends up dead in a jail cell, things don’t bode well for the sheriff and his cronies.
Ivy and his two younger brothers, along with some buddies are going to mete out their own brand of small town, vigilante justice.
Evans claims stories of the “weird tales’ variety are his favorite to write and he just proved it again. I can’t begin to imagine this happening in real life. Maybe it has, but it would’ve been hard to miss the headlines.
You don’t get to know Sissy. She’s already dead when the story starts. What you do get is the raging inferno that is Ivy’s hatred and need to maim.
Bakersville reminds me of towns I passed on road trips. They looked almost abandoned and I barely gave them a glance. Evans sets the mood with “a starless night, still and waiting.†The town won’t be recognizable after these boys get done.
One thing you’ll learn after reading more of this authors stories is not to think you know what’s happening. You’ll be wrong. Everything I thought I knew about Ivy was thrown out the window quickly. My biggest shock wasn’t what was happening to the town. It was about what happened the first time Ivy met Sissy. You’ll see what I mean.
Evans usually adds a little levity to his horror and suspense. At first I thought Milwaukee’s Beast was a typo. Then I remembered how he writes and knew it was on purpose.
Some good descriptions of Ivy
“A fistful of vengeance and a truckload of hell fire!â€
“I’m an ‘eye for an eye’ kind of guy.â€
While I often wish Evans would write an epic full length novel, I don’t think my poor heart could take it. I should have known he wouldn’t take me where I originally thought he would. His stories never go in a straight line.
Once again, the author sucked me into the darkness, finally letting me crawl back into the light, with some of that darkness following me like an ecto-plasmic tag along.
This story will linger with me for a long time.
If you’re a fan of horror, if you like it raw and wriggling, treat yourself to Don’t Need No Water. It’s a killer read.
First, I am a big fan of Evans Light, one of the most innovative short horror writers on . His stories are a mix of cleverness, wit, and genuine creepiness that almost always delight. Having said that, however, nobody's perfect, and "Don't Need No Water" sacrifices his usual cleverness for a heavy dose of torture porn and a "surprise" ending that readers will see coming a mile away.
"Water" is a tale of revenge set in a small Southern town. Iverson, the narrator, has a grudge against a lot of the people in his hometown, and, with his brothers and a friend, sets out to wreak havoc on those he feels wronged him. As the story unfolds, we learn that Iverson is upset about the death of his girlfriend, Sissy, who had been arrested on very minor charges, and brutally raped and eventually killed while in the local jail. Now, Iverson wants the sheriff and everyone else responsible to pay.
Iverson's chosen method of revenge involves fire... namely burning as much of the town down as possible. Along the way, Iverson and company brutalize, torture, and murder several people, all of which Light describes in fairly graphic fashion. Light is a good writer, so there are some clever turns of phrase and his depictions of the violence are fairly vivid (and, although graphic, not quite as bad as some torture porn turns out to be). However, one scene seems pretty much like the next, and by the time Iverson gets to the sheriff himself, most readers will probably be jaded.
Perhaps to make up for the somewhat rote storytelling, Light attempts a surprise ending. Unfortunately, he telegraphs it quite early in the story, and most readers will figure it out well before the final confrontation between Iverson and the sheriff, at which time the sheriff reveals it to Iverson. Even more unfortunately, Light has constructed the story so that the ending serves as a major emotional counterweight to what Iverson and his friends had been going through during the preceding 30 pages or so. Without an effective surprise, the story doesn't have the emotional effect Light intended.
Although some readers may enjoy torture porn and, for that reason, rate the story higher, I am not a big fan. Torture porn may be a lot of things, but it's rarely actually scary, and it isn't scary here. Too many pedestrian writers fall back on torture porn and try to put as many graphic details as possible in the body of the story to shock readers. As a result, as with regular porn in a story, the torture porn becomes the story.
Unlike the hacks who routinely dish out the gruesome details in their stories, Evans Light knows how to write and can construct a compelling story without having to resort to an appeal to the disgusting. Although his depiction of the various horror scenes is vivid, the story becomes more repetitive than scary. Light normally charges for this story, which is one more reason for horror fans to pass on it. There are lots better (and scarier) examples of Light's storytelling prowess than this very routine tale.
