I grew up watching the movie version of Where the Heart Is over and over with my mother. I always knew it was based on a book, but didn't pick it up til now.

This was one of those darn good, wholesome reads, especially if you've ever been a mother, ever felt lost in life, have ever needed a little luck, or have ever hurt yourself for love. I laughed and cried right along side Novalee Nation, as she grew up and pulled herself up by her bootstraps and plunged through constant turmoil, heartbreak, and hope. Definitely worth a read.

Side note: However, though I'm not sure about the printed version, the digital version is poorly edited/transcribed, and there are constant spelling and grammatical errors. Try to gloss over that and focus on the story, but it IS pretty annoying, especially when it happens throughout most of the pivotal moments in the story.

I have seen the movie version of this book several times, and as always the case with books vs. movie versions, the book contained a lot more detail, scenarios, and characters. While I enjoyed the feel good story, I felt that it was a little unbelivable in the sense that everything seemed to fall neatly into place for Novalee, once she had her baby. So the book, contains very little conflict for her.

For example, ALL of the town's characters were willing to drop everything and bend over backwards to help her and the baby, she was able to pick up the skill of photography, very quickly with little training, a man she barely knows, invites her to a candle lit, gourmet dinner just days after her arrival in Oklahoma, and there is really no build up to this, she finds a job instantly in town (the company president justs hands it over to her.), and she finds lodging for her and her baby right away.

for those of you who have not read the book/seen the movie....the following contains spoilers, so you may not want to read this.

The book differs from the movie.....

Novalee's unlucky number is 7 and not 5

Lexie Coop is obese and not thin like Ashley Judd in the movie

Lexie Coop does marry, but it is not to an Exterminator named Ernie, it is to a male nurse that she met at the hospital.

There are several more neighbors and friends for Novalee than were seen in the movies

Novalee takes a photography course at the local college

Her and Forney do not marrry,

In conclusion, this is a good feel good, chicken soup for the soul type book, where everything is going to be ok. A good light read, that will keep you engaged.
recommended Billie Letts to me because I like Fannie Flagg's books so much. I have read all of Fannie Flagg's books now, never had heard of Billie Letts, but decided to try her. I can see why relates the two writers Both write about slightly offbeat characters and both writers will tug at your heartstrings towards the end. I consider Fannie Flagg to be much superior - funnier with characters that while offbeat are nevertheless recognizable. But Where the Heart Is is the second of Billie Letts' books I've read now (the first was The Honk and Holler Opening Soon) and I enjoyed both books. While the characters may be somewhat two-dimensional as a critical review suggested , they are characters that I found myself caring about within a page or two. I do wish that not every character had a name that was too cute by half - I found that alienating. The book is primarily plot-driven. Don't read this book if you are looking for high literature. It isn't that. I would suggest that you not read it if you are male since it is hard for me to imagine a male liking it. But if you are a female who is in the mood to read a book that is entertaining and touching with enough plot twists to keep you interested, I would recommend this book. It's kind of like ice cream you know there are more nourishing things out there and you know you enjoy those more nourishing things, too - but every now and then something sweet is nice.
Where the Heart is by Billie Letts is an old book - and by that I mean it came out when I was in my sophomore year of high school, which was a very, very long time ago. The librarian, Mrs. Wu, would order books and she'd tell me to read them. I happily did, even when they were not to my taste, and even years later, I would come back to thinking about different aspects of the books, even those I had not liked.

I am a writer by trade, and this blog is just something I do for funsies, for now. It gives me a break from the "have to" writing to write something I want - just blurt onto the page. Well, long story short, for one of my clients, something I was working on sparked a recollection of this book and I got a hankering to read it again. I ordered it, it showed up, I read it start to finish within about an hour.

It's a light read. In spite of this, there's something about this book that will get you to thinking. And that "thing" - whatever it may be, changes depending on what your mindset is when you read it. Even all these decades later, it's still a good book. I'd put it in the same category as Fried Green Tomatoes - it's the same type of book. Different subject matter, different setting, but the same type of book, if that makes sense. It's a good book, but I can't much say more than that without giving something away.

Going to write the review tonight (as I post the book reviews on Goodreads and in addition to here) - I found out something else. Turns out this one was made into a movie with a very, very young Natalie Portman - pre degree. And now I'm going to have to find that one to watch to see how well it holds up to the book.
