Durant's Story of Civilization series is just the right length for a survey of Western history from the earliest times to 1815. It is long enough to cover important events, cultural developments, and persons in some detail, yet short enough to maintain pace and flow. Although the references are by now rather dated, books or other resources that go into more detail on any desired subject can be readily found/obtained through a Google search, an search, or by using other Web based resources. Durant gives generally fair treatment to all sides of important issues. This series is a great starting point for an understanding of any historical period from a European perspective. The availability of this series in format removes the major objection of the weight of the paper volumes. A great buy for anyone who wants to educate herself/himself in the history of the West.
For the academically minded this volume is superb, and typically well written. It fills in a lot of holes in our pedestrian knowledge.
What makes this and its companion volumes great are the exceptional qualities of mind and narrative style that give to the reader a unified appreciation of the achievements (and failures) of the past.
Anything by Will Durant is pure candy to read, but this book is one of his better efforts. It's a pity most professional historians don't write as well as him.
Will Durant never disappoints. I go back to this book frequently. You can read and enjoy bits of it anytime.
Although it is obvoius that to squeeze 7 centuries of history of Europe and Asia Minor into 1 volume (although very thick) is a task for an ingenious historian, to make this volume engrossing and even fascinating - is hardly achievable. But Mr. Durant's talent is unsurpassed the book contains summary of all important events - military and religeous, cultural and social - as well as biographies of legendary personae of the times we used to call the Dark Ages. But the language of the book and the details it provides are not just dry facts (which makes many other similar compilations boring and easily forgettable), the author makes you feel and understand the customs and rites of the epoch, its way of dressing, food, family relations..., by drawing parallels with our times. I have read quite a few books on history of that period, and by far, this book, employing a special scientific approach, is the best, although written several decades ago it throbbs with the echo of life of centuries long past.
As usual, the legendary 19th century born American historian writes with authority, flare, and an innate understanding of all aspects of civilizations and nuances that encompass a civilization including human and physical geography and the cultural geography and details brought out in an easy to understand format that is well organized and categorized for both historians as well as "armchair" historians. Highly recommend this volume and preceding volumes as well.
